Jeremiah 17:9
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
We live in a world that constantly tells us to follow our hearts, trust our instincts, and look within for answers. It sounds inspiring, even empowering, but Scripture offers a sobering truth: the human heart, as it is, cannot be trusted.
According to this verse in Jeremiah, the heart is deceitful and beyond cure. That means our feelings, though real, can lead us in the wrong direction. Our emotions, while powerful, are not always aligned with what is good or true. The human heart has been shaped by sin and wounded by life. It often justifies selfishness, masks pride as wisdom, and confuses desire with love.
But this verse is not the end of the story. God knows our hearts better than we do. He sees the layers we hide, the pain we carry, and the motivations we don’t even understand ourselves. And still, He loves us. He does not turn away in disappointment. Instead, He offers to take that broken heart and begin a work of healing and renewal from within.
When we surrender our hearts to God, He does what we cannot. He softens what has grown hard, brings clarity where there was confusion, and redirects our desires toward what is good and life-giving. This is not about behavior modification. It is about a deep transformation. It is about allowing God’s Spirit to guide us, shape us, and teach us how to walk in truth.
Let us pray:
Lord, I’ve often followed my own heart without stopping to ask You first. On its own, my heart can lead me down the wrong paths. I ask You to examine it, to cleanse it, and to transform it. Teach me to trust Your truth more than my emotions, and guide me by Your Spirit. Amen.
